Mulberries

Red mulberries are medium sized trees with large green leaves of varying shapes, some are oval, some are lobed like sassafras. Trees mature to a rounded shape, and if not pruned can grow 40′ tall  The dark red to purple fruit is up to 1 1/4″ long, and looks like a blackberry. Berries are very sweet, juicy, and mild in flavor, and are coveted by birds, animals, and humans when they ripen in early-mid summer. The berries are eaten fresh, and make wonderful preserves, pies, and wine. Red mulberries are native to Michigan, and occur naturally about halfway up the lower peninsula. They are quite tolerant of varying site and soil conditions as long as they get half a day of sunshine, and the ground is not excessively wet or dry.

These are not the invasive white or Russian mulberries that are native to Asia and are considered a weed species in the U.S.

Red mulberry trees grow rapidly and begin bearing fruit in 3-4 years. Planting several trees is recommended, as some seem to be non fruiting males.
